From the National Assembly no fewer than 44 members of the House of Representatives have raised their voices in unison and called on President Tinubu to do well and grant unconditional freedom to Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
The federal lawmakers defied party, regional and ethnic barriers in pushing for Kanu’s release, saying that the continued detention and trial of the Biafra activist has become a national issue that needed political intervention by Mr. President.
To press home their demand, the lawmakers from the Green Chambers of the National Assembly wrote a letter to Tinubu dated November 18, 2025, urging him to exercise his presidential prerogative and order for Kanu’s release without further delay.
In the letter, the federal legislators stated that the President has the power to end the travails of the IPOB leader, and should not hesitate to use such powers in the interest of natonal peace and harmony.
“We hereby respectfully and earnestly request that you direct the Attorney-General of the Federation (Lateef Fagbemi, SAN), to exercise his constitutional powers and discontinue the prosecution of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu; and to initiate a constructive dialogue aimed at seeking a just political solution,” the lawmakers said.
The concerned House of Representatives members said that they took their stance after making series of consultations across ethnic and party divides lines. They further urged Mr. President to convene a broad, inclusive dialogue to address grievances linked to the agitation in the Southeast zone.
The lawmakers argued that keeping Kanu in detention serves no purpose whatsoever given the prevailing tension in the Southeast over his persecution, in addition to several local and international rulings in IPOB leader’s favour.
They reminded President Tinubu that past administrations had opened negotiations with similar agitating groups in different regions, hence the same measure should apply in Kanu’s case in order to achieve political solution.
The 44 like-minded legislators stated that the ongoing prosecution of Kanu has continued to worsen insecurity in the South East, adding that releasing Kanu would douse tension, enhance security, and restore confidence among residents and investors.
They made Tinubu understand that their motive was devoid of partisan interest but solely anchored on national interest, noting that Nigeria urgently needs healing and long-term stability.
