For the first time in its existence as a political party in Nigeria, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has made a clean sweep of Local Government election in Enugu State. It won all the 17 Chairmanship seats in the 2026 Local Government poll held on Saturday September 26, 2026 across the LGs comprising a total of 260 wards.
Executive Chairman of the Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission (ENSIEC), Professor Christian Chukwudubem Ngwu declared the results Sunday September 27 at the headquarters of the state electoral body in Enugu.
However, he did not announce the official results of the Councillorship election which was held simultaneously with the Chairmanship poll.
Prof Ngwu said that the LG poll was conducted in line with “the applicable laws, regulations and guidelines of the Commission”.
The LG poll was contested by seven political parties, including the ruling APC, ADP, APGA, BOOT, NDC faction, and NRM, while most of the opposition parties such as PDP and ADC were said to have abstained from participating in the Council poll.
The official results announced by the ENSIEC Executive Chairman, who is also the Chief Returning Officer, showed that all the elected Council Chairmen scored over 95 percent of votes cast in their respective LGs.
Prof Ngwu thanked the people of Enugu State for their active participation in the Council polls, adding that it was “peaceful, transparent, free and fair”.
He stated that ENSIEC was committed to living up to its mandate and would always conduct transparent and credible polls at every LG election cycle in Enugu State.
The announcement of the results was immediately followed by the issuance of certificates of return to the elected Chairmen amid jubilations by their supporters. The ENSIEC Chairman charged them to see their victories as call to serve the people of their respective LGs.
