Otti’s Wife Hints at Starting Pet Project to Help Vulnerable Groups

Declares New Dawn for Abia Women


Wife of Abia State Governor, Mrs. Priscilla Otti, has revealed that her pet project would focus on supporting the vulnerable groups in the state.

She made this known in her address entitled “A new dawn for Abia women” during the flagoff of this year’s annual Abia Women August Delegates Conference(AWADEC), with the theme: “Abia Women: Dare to Dream”, held at the Ochendo International Conference Centre, Umuahia.

The Abia First, who was hosting the AWADEC for the first time, said that iher programme would offer succour to single mothers, widows, infants and children with special needs.

Mrs. Otti said that her programme of action would include fighting the menace of gender- based violence, setting up structures to support education of brilliant indigent girls, girls with interest in skill aquisition, women farmers and entrepreneurs.

The Abia First Lady reminded Abia women of the commitment and strategic decision of the Governor Alex Otti administration to put women at the helm of affairs and give them equal representation in governance.

To back her claims, Mrs. Otti cities the ministries of agriculture, education and health where women hold sway as commissioners as well other high ranking women appointees such as the Accountant General and Head of Service(HoS)

She further noted that several other female appointees are in government, either working directly or indirectly with the governor, thereby confirming the woman-friendly disposition of this administration.

According to her, Governor Otti believes in women because, “We are dependable and trustworthy”, adding, “Onye ji nwanyi, ji ihe” which literally translates to ‘women are precious assets to have’.

Governor Otti, in his address, corroborated his wife, saying that women are already assigned key roles and therefore, would be central in driving his vision for a new Abia that works for everybody.

He said that his belief in the capacity of women for nation-building made him to strategically place women to be in charge of the areas he had declared emergency – health, education, agriculture.

“We will like to assure you of all the support that is possible from this Government. We have started by giving very serious appointments to women,” the Abia governor said.

In his remarks, Senator Darlington Nwokocha, who represents Abia Central described women as a positive force in the society and assured them that things are changing for the better in Abia State.

He promised that the National Assembly members from Abia would work collaboratively with the governor to achieve set goals of the new government, adding that there would be nothing like Abuja and Abia politicians.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Mrs. Ngozi Felix, who said that August Delegates’ Conference was gradually becoming a movement of sort for women’s welfare and active participation in governance.

Mrs. Otti distributed some palliatives and monetary gifts to 34 physically challenged women, 34 elderly women and 34 widows across the 17 local governments of the state.
